Nestled on the southwestern slopes of Mount Kenya at 1700 meters above sea level, Nyeri County takes its name from the Masaai word "nyiro", meaning red, after the nutrient-rich volcanic soil that creates the perfect terroir for exceptional coffee. This crimson earth, rich in organic matter and nutrients, provides the foundation for what many consider Kenya's finest coffees.

Ichuga station is one of five factories owned by Kiama Farmer Cooperative Society, a community-driven organization that supports its 726 farmer members with pre-harvest financing and training. These smallholder farmers, cultivating coffee gardens averaging less than 1 hectare, grow primarily the legendary SL28 and SL34 varietals - cultivars developed in the 1930s with deep root structures that maximize scarce water resources.

The fully washed process at Ichuga reflects Kenya's meticulous approach to quality. Farmers selectively handpick ripe cherries, which are carefully sorted at intake before being pulped and fermented in clean water to remove mucilage. Kenya's distinctive double fermentation involves 24 hours of fermentation, followed by agitation and another 24-hour cycle, then washing and overnight soaking - a process that encourages extra sweetness and complexity. The beans finish drying on raised beds, turned regularly and protected during the day's heat.

In the cup:  mandarin zest, layers of berries, honey, balanced by bright lime acidity and subtle spice - a testament to both terroir and craftsmanship.

Recommended resting period: Allow at least 8 days from the roast date.
